Dragging: occurs when the chain suddenly stops touching an object in the wood along the
bottom of the bar. This sudden stop causes the chain saw to be dragged forward and away
from the operator, causing loss of control of the machine.
WARNING
The most dangerous reactive force is the kickback.
Kickback: occurs when the end of the bar touches an object and suddenly moves upwards
and backwards. Kickback can also occur when the wood closes and tightens the chain while
cutting. In both cases, this sudden stop of the chain causes the overturning of the active
forces present in cutting the wood, causing the chain saw to move in the opposite direction
to that of the chain’s rotation. The chain saw is pushed up and back towards the
operator.
Kickback is the result of tool misuse and/or incorrect operating procedures or conditions and
can be avoided by taking proper precautions as given below:
Precautions against kickback and reactive forces
WARNING
Keep in mind that kickback and other reaction forces can take place. With an
understanding of kickbacks and reaction forces, you can reduce the surprise factor
that contributes to accidents.
Risks from kickback and other reactive forces can be reduced by the following actions:
Behave appropriately and adopt all safety rules.
Correctly use the safety devices built into the chain saw.
Always pay attention to the position of the end of the bar.
Never let the end of the bar touch any object.
Be careful when cutting small branches, small bushes and saplings that can lock the chain.
Free the work area from any obstacles, such as trees, branches, rocks, fences, stumps, etc.
Avoid any obstacles that the chain saw can touch.
Keep the chain sharp and properly adjusted; a dull or slack chain increases the possibility of
kickback. Follow the manufacturer’s sharpening and maintenance instructions for the
saw chain. Check the tensioning regularly. Make sure that the locknuts are firmly tightened.
Decreasing the depth gauge height can lead to increased kickback.
Start and continue cutting at full speed. If the chain moves at a slower speed, the risk of
kickback is greater.
Only cut one log at a time.
Use extreme caution when resuming a previously started cut.
Do not try to start the cut with the tip of the bar (plunge cut).
Beware of moving logs or other objects that can close the cut and tighten the chain.
Only use spare chains and bars specific to your model of chain saw and approved by
the manufacturer. Incorrect replacement bars and chains may cause chain breakage and/or
kickback.
