Chapter 1 Tune up and routine maintenance 7 7 Hold the switch body and turn the plastic nut arrow to adjust switch position 1 9 8 2 To adjust the front brake lever free play loosen the locknut arrow and turn the screw be sure to tighten the locknut after adjustment spongy or if the pedal is spongy on models with rear disc brakes bleed the brakes as described in Chapter 6 4 Make sure the brake light operates when the brake lever or pedal is depressed 5 Make sure the brake light is activated just before the rear brake takes effect 6 If adjustment is necessary remove the following components for access a XJ FJ600 if necessary remove the right side cover a FZ600 remove two bolts and take off the protective plate b YX600 Radian remove the carburetor cover Chapter 3 and the right side cover Chapter 7 7 Hold the switch and turn the adjusting nut on the switch body see illustration until the brake light is activated when required If the switch doesn t operate the brake lights check it as described in Chapter 8 8 The front brake light switch is not adjustable If it fails to operate properly replace it with a new one see Chapter 8 8 Brake lever play and pedal position check and adjustment 8 5 To adjust brake pedal free play on drum brake models pull the brake lever forward away from the adjusting nut and turn the adjusting nut Front brake Refer to illustration 8 2 1 The front brake lever must have the amount of free play listed in this Chapter s Specifications to prevent brake drag 2 Operate the lever and check free play If it s not correct loosen the adjuster locknut turn the adjuster to bring free play within the Specifications and tighten the locknut see illustration Rear brake 3 The rear brake pedal on all models should be positioned below the top of the footpeg the distance listed in this chapter s Specifi cations On drum brake models brake free play should be adjusted manually on disc brake models free play is adjusted automatically Drum brake models Refer to illustration 8 5 4 Brake pedal height is adjusted by a bolt that presses against the brake pedal arm To adjust the position of the pedal loosen the locknut on the adjuster bolt turn the adjuster bolt to set the pedal position and tighten the locknut 5 Check pedal free play and compare it to the value listed in this Chapter s Specifications If it s incorrect turn the adjuster on the rear brake lever to chance it see illustration If adjustment causes the brake wear indicato to go past the end of the scale see illustra tion 6 1 disassemble the brake and check for wear see Chapter 6 8 6 To adjust the brake pedal height on disc brake models loosen the locknut upper arrow and turn the adjusting bolt the end of the adjusting bolt must be visible in the hole lower arrow after adjustment Disc brake models Refer to illustration 8 6 6 Check pedal height and compare it to the value listed in this Chapter s Specifications Adjust it if necessary by loosening the locknuts on the adjusting bolt turning the adjusting bolt as needed and tightening the locknuts see illustration
