Leak test and vacuum drying of the refrigerant piping
After connection of the piping at both the condensing unit and air
conditioner side, a leak test must be performed and the air in the
refrigerant piping must be evacuated to a value of 3 mbars absolute
by means of a vacuum pump.
Required equipment:
■ External pressure source with pressure gauge and pressure
regulator (e.g. N2 - nitrogen cylinder)
■ Gauge manifold (class 1,0)
■ Vacuum pump
Procedure (see figure 4a and figure 4b):
1. Keep the gas line stop valve (1) and the liquid line stop valve (2)
closed.
2. Connect the high pressure valve of the gauge manifold (3) to the
service port of the liquid line stop valve (4) and the low pressure
valve of the gauge manifold (5) to the service port of the gas line
stop valve (6).
3. Connect the N2 cylinder (7) to the gauge manifold.
4. Make sure that the cylinder valve (8) and the regulating valve (9)
are closed.
5. Open the N2 cylinder valve (8) and the pressure valves of the
gauge manifold.
6. Pressurise the circuit up to 20 bar by opening the regulating
valve (9) of the N2 cylinder stepwise.
7. Close the low pressure valve (5) and pressurise the liquid side
up to 28 bar.
8. Close the cylinder valve (8) and the high pressure valve of the
gauge manifold (3).
9. Loosen the charge hose to release its pressure.
10. Close the regulating valve (9) completely.
11. Remove the charge hose from the manifold.
12. Check the connections marked with for leakage. Apply soap-
suds to the connections and inspect carefully. After checking
wipe them off completely.
13. Release the pressure of the circuit by opening the pressure
valves.
If the piping length between the condensing unit and the air
conditioner exceeds 8 m, additional refrigerant R22 must now be
charged: follow the procedure given in "Refrigerant charge".
Otherwise, continue with step14. below.
14. Connect the gauge manifold to the vacuum pump (10).
15. Start the vacuum pump.
16. Check that the low pressure gauge pointer stabilises and
indicates a constant level (3 mbars).
Tr y to reach perfect vacuum (gauge reading - atmospheric
pressure 1013 mbars).
17. Close the pressure valves of the gauge manifold.
18. Stop the vacuum pump.
19. Disconnect the vacuum pump from the gauge manifold.
20. Remove the blind cap from the gas line stop valve (11) and the
liquid line stop valve (12).
21. Loosen the gland packing retainers of the gas line stop valve
(11) and the liquid line stop valve (12) using a hexagon wrench.
22. Partially open the gas line stop valve and the liquid line stop
valve and wait until the pressure indicated by the low pressure
gauge pointer equals the pressure indicated by the high
pressure gauge pointer.
23. Fully open the gas line stop valve and the liquid line stop valve.
24. Remove the hoses between the gauge manifold and the
condensing unit.
25. Check the stop valves for leakage.
Refrigerant charge
If the piping length between the condensing unit and the air
conditioner exceeds 8 m, additional refrigerant R22 must be charged:
Required equipment:
■ R22 refrigerant cylinder
■ Balance
■ Gauge manifold
■ T-joint
■ Shut-off valve
Procedure (see figure 5a and figure 5b):
1 Place the R22 refrigerant cylinder (1) upside down and connect
it, together with the vacuum pump (2), to the gauge manifold (3)
using a T-joint (9).
Provide a shut-off valve (4) between the T-joint and the vacuum
pump.
2 Be sure that the valve of the R22 cylinder is completely closed.
3 Open the shut-off valve (4).
4 Start the vacuum pump.
5 Check that the low pressure gauge pointer stabilises and
indicates a constant level (3 mbars).
Tr y to reach perfect vacuum (gauge reading - atmospheric
pressure 1013 mbars).
6 Close the shut-off valve (4).
7 Stop the vacuum pump.
8 Close the low pressure valve of the gauge manifold (5).
9 Weigh the R22 cylinder.
10 Open the valve of the R22 cylinder.
11 Charge the required volume R22 and then close the high
pressure valve (6).
Do not purge the air with refrigerants. Use a vacuum pump
to vacuum the installation. No additional refrigerant is
provided for air purging.
Gaseous R22
N2
Liquid R22
Refrigerant may only be charged after performing a leak
test (see before).
When charging a system, care shall be taken that its
maximum permissible charge is never exceeded, in view of
the danger of liquid hammer.
Charging with an unsuitable substance may cause explo-
sions and accidents, so always ensure that the appropriate
refrigerant (R22) is charged.
Refrigerant containers shall be opened slowly.
Always wear protective gloves and protect your eyes when
charging refrigerant.
