(manual operation), or automatically by inertia when the guard is pushed forward (Fig. 18) in
the event of a sudden kickback (inertial operation). The chain brake is released by pulling the
lever towards the operator (Fig. 3).
9.4 BRAKE OPERATION CHECK
When checking the machine, before starting any work, check operation of the brake by
following the points below:
1. Start the engine and grip the handles firmly with both hands.
2. Pull the throttle trigger to set the chain in motion, push the brake lever forward, using the
back of your left hand (Fig. 11).
3. When the brake works the chain stops immediately; release the throttle trigger.
4. Release the brake (Fig. 3).
9.5 BRAKE MAINTENANCE
Always keep the chain brake mechanism clean and lubricate the linkage. Check the wear of the
brake band. The minimum thickness must be 0.30 mm.
9.6 WORKING WITH PRUNING CHAINSAWS WITH A ROPE AND A BELT HARNESS
This chapter describes some work procedures to reduce the risk of injury with pruning
chainsaws when working at height with the aid of a rope and a belt harness. This information is
a basic guideline, but does not in any way replace formal training, which the operator must
necessarily receive. National laws and regulations must always be respected.
General requirements for working at height
Operators of pruning chainsaws who work at height with the aid of a rope and a belt harness
must never work alone. They must be assisted by a ground operator who has received training
in appropriate emergency procedures.
Operators of pruning chainsaws must have received general training in safe climbing
techniques and working positions for this job and be properly equipped with belt harnesses,
ropes, flat straps with end slots, carabiners and other equipment to keep steady and to hold the
chainsaw, adopting safe working positions.
Preparation before using the chainsaw on a tree
The chainsaw must be checked, refueled, started and preheated by the operator on the ground
and, then, be turned off before passing it to the operator who is on the tree. It is necessary to
secure the chainsaw with a flat belt suitable for connecting to the operator’s harness (A, Fig. 15):
a. attach the flat belt to the attachment point on the back of the chainsaw (Fig. 17);
b. provide suitable carabiners that allow the chainsaw to be connected indirectly (i.e. by means
of the flat belt) and directly (i.e. at the attachment point of the chainsaw) to the operator’s
belt harness;
c. make sure that the chainsaw is connected securely when passed to the operator;
d. make sure that the chainsaw is attached to the belt harness before detaching it from the
means of ascent.
