The ability to attach the chainsaw directly to the belt harness reduces the risk of damage to the
equipment when moving around the tree. Always disconnect the power supply of the chainsaw
when it is directly attached to the belt harness.
It is necessary to connect the chainsaw to the recommended attachment points on the belt
harness. These can be on the midpoint (front or rear) or on the sides. Whenever possible,
connect the chainsaw to the central rear midpoint to prevent it from interfering with the
climbing ropes and from supporting its weight in the center, towards the base of the operator’s
spine (B, Fig. 15).
When moving a chainsaw from one attachment point to another, operators must ensure that it
is secured in the new position before unhooking it from the previous attachment point.
Using a chainsaw on a tree
An analysis of accidents with these chainsaws during tree pruning operations show that the
main cause is the inappropriate use of the chainsaw with one hand. In most accidents,
operators do not try to adopt a safe working position that allows them to hold the chainsaw
with both hands. This results in an increased risk of injury from:
failure to have a firm grip on the chainsaw in the event of a kickback.
failure to have control of the chainsaw such as to increase the probability of coming into
contact with the climbing ropes and with the operator’s body (in particular the left hand and
arm).
a loss of control caused by an unsafe working position and resulting in contact with the
chainsaw (unintentional movement while the chainsaw is running).
Safe working position for two-handed use
To allow operators to hold the chainsaw with both hands, it is necessary, as a general rule, for
operators to look to a safe working position when operating the chainsaw:
at the hip, when cutting horizontal sections.
at the level of the solar plexus, when cutting vertical sections.
When the operator works near vertical trunks with low lateral forces on the working position,
good support may be required to maintain a safe working position. However, as operators move
away from the trunk, they will need to take steps to cancel or neutralize the increasing lateral
forces, for example by changing direction of the main rope by means of an additional anchor
point or by using an adjustable flat belt directly from the strap harness to an additional anchor
point (A, Fig. 16).
Achieving good support in the working position can be facilitated by the use of a stirrup
created temporarily by a loop strap in which to insert the foot (C, Fig. 15).
Starting the chainsaw on a tree
When starting the chainsaw on a tree, the operator must:
a. operate the chain brake before starting.
b. keep the chainsaw either on the left side or on the right side of the body before starting,
