1. on the left side, keep the chainsaw with your left hand resting on the front handle,

holding the chainsaw away from your body while pulling the starter rope with your right

hand.

2. on the right side, keep the chainsaw with your right hand resting on one of the two

handles, holding the chainsaw away from your body while pulling the starter rope with

your left hand.

The chain brake must always be engaged before leaving the chainsaw in operation hanging

from the flat belt.

Operators should always check that the chainsaw has enough fuel before making critical cuts.

Using the chainsaw with one hand

Operators should not use pruning chainsaws one-handed when in an unstable working position

or in preference to a hand saw when cutting small diameter wood at the ends of branches.

Pruning chainsaws should only be used one-handed when:

• operators cannot maintain a working position that allows them to use both hands;

• they need to maintain their working position with one hand;

• the chainsaw is used in full extension, perpendicular to the operator’s body and away from

the body (B, Fig. 16).

Operators must:

• never cut with the kickback zone on the end of the chainsaw bar;

• never “cut and hold” sections of wood;

• never try to catch sections of wood when they fall.

Freeing a stuck chainsaw

If the chainsaw gets stuck when cutting, operators must:

• turn off the chainsaw and attach it safely to the part of the branch that goes from the trunk

to the cut or to a separate tool rope;

• pull the chainsaw from the side of the notch while lifting the branch, if necessary;

• if necessary, use a hand saw or a second chainsaw to free the jammed chainsaw by making a

cut of at least 30 cm around the jammed chainsaw.

If a hand saw or chainsaw is used to free a jammed chainsaw, the cuts must be made towards

the tip of the branch (i. e. between the jammed chainsaw and the tip of the branch and not

between the trunk and the stuck chainsaw) in order to prevent the chainsaw from being

dragged with the part of the branch that is cut and the situation from becoming even more

complicated.
