Seat belts pr ovide the pri mary res trai nt to all oc cupants of the

vehic le, and every occupant of the vehic le s hould wear seat belts

properl y at all tim es. Chil dren shoul d always be secured in chil d

restraint systems that are appropriate f or thei r age and siz e. SRS

(Supplement al Restrai nt Syst em) airbags ar e, as their names im-

ply, designed to work with, and be supplemental to, seat belts and

are not subst itut es for them. SRS ai rbags can be very eff ecti ve in

reduci ng the ri sk of head and c hest injur ies by pr eventi ng contac t

of the head and ches t with interior port ions of the v ehicle.

In order t o be effectiv e, the SRS airbags must deploy with tr e-

mendous speed. The rapid deployment of the S RS air bags makes

the SRS airbags themselv es potential sourc es of death or ser ious

injur y if an occupant is too clos e to an ai rbag, or if an objec t or

some part of his or her body has been placed between the

occupant and the airbag at the tim e of deploy ment. Thi s i s jus t

one example of how t he ins truc tions i n Sect ion 1−3ofthisOwn-

er ’s Manual will help ensur e pr oper us e of the oc cupant r estr aint

systems, and increase the safety they can provide to you and

your family in the event of an accident .
