ENGINE COMPRESSION CHECK The compression of a cylinder is a good indicator of its internal condition The decision to overhaul the cylinders is often based on the results of a compression test Periodic maintenance records kept at your dealership should include compression readings for each maintenance service Compression Standard Limit 9 13 kg cm2 128 184 psi 7 kg cm2 100 psi Fig 7 18 TOP END REMOVAL Max difference between cylinders 2 kg cm2 28 5 psi Cylinder head cover SH Low compression can indicate any of the following malconditions Excessively worn cylinder wall Worn down piston or piston rings Piston rings stuck in the grooves Poor sealing of valves Ruptured or otherwise defective cylinder head gasket When the compression noted is down to or below the value indicated above the engine must be overhauled with these five malcon ditions in mind Compression test procedure I JJ en i snug At tcmpiL ion of the nude wit hat the r ir rwi Fig 7 19 Chain tensioner adjuster This is accomplished by first loosening lock nut and tightening screw and then by remov ing two mounting bolts 1 Remove all spark plugs 2 Fit the compression gauge T to one of the plug holes taking care that the connection is absolutely tight 09915 64510 Compression gauge 3 Twist the throttle grip into full open position 4 Crank the engine a few seconds with the starter and read the maximum gauge reading as the compression of that cy linder Repeat this procedure with the other cylinders Fig 7 20 7 9
