Threeormorenotesplayedtogetherconstitutea"chord".
Themostbasicchordtypeisthe"triad"consistingthreenotes:
theroot,third,andfifthdegreesofthecorrespondingscale.
A"Cmajortriad",forexample,ismadeupofthenotesC(theroot),
E(thethirdnoteoftheCmajorscale),andG(thefifthnoteofthe
Cmajorscale).
IntheCmajortriadshownabove,thelowestnoteisthe"root"of
thechord(thisisthechord's"rootposition"...usingotherchordnotes
forthelowestnoteresultsin"inversion").Therootisthecentral
soundofthechord,whichsupportsandanchorstheotherchordnotes.
Thedistance(interval)betweenadjacentnotesoftriadinrootposition
iseitheramajororminorthird.
Thelowestintervalinourroot-positiontrial(betweentherootandthe
third)determineswhetherthetriadisamajororminorchord,andwe
canshiftthehighestnoteupordownbyasemitonetoproducetwo
additionalchords,asshownbelow.
Thebasiccharacteristicsofthechordsoundremainintactevenifwe
changetheorderofthenotestocreatedifferentinversions.Successive
chordsinachordprogressioncanbesmoothlyconnected,forexample,
bychoosingtheappropriateinversions(orchord"voicings").
Chordnamestellyoujustabouteverythingyouneedtoknowabouta
chord(otherthantheinversion/voicing).Thechordnametellsyou
whattherootofachordis,whetheritismajor,minor,ordiminished,
whetheritrequiresamajororflattedseventh,whatalterationsor
tensiondoesituse...allataglance.
