TYPICAL USE
The Bass Octave effect is perfect for lling out your bass guitar sound,
especially in a small group setting. By turning on the effect and play-
ing notes higher on the neck, you’ll sound as though your normal bass
line is doubled by a rhythm guitar (think Booker T. & the M.G.’s with
“Green Onions”…try it with a pick!) By playing lower notes with the
effect, you’ll add an ominous, subharmonic rumble to your bass lines.
To generate the classic “doubled” sound from the Bass Octave effect,
turn the “Dry” knob all the way up, while the “Octave” knob is set
between  turn and full depending on the desired level of the added
sub-octave tone. The effect is most pronounced on notes played from
A and above.
TIPS AND TRICKS
Remember, when you use the Bass Octave effect, you’re generating
notes a full octave below the note being played. Your amplier might
need some adjustment to account for the greater dose of bass fre-
quencies you’re pumping through it. If your tone breaks up or sounds
too “rumbly”, try either reducing the amount of the octave effect with
the MXR’s “Octave” knob, or roll off some of the bass EQ with your
amplier’s tone controls.
You can also use the Bass Octave to make your 4 string bass sound
like a 5 string! Try turning the “Dry” knob all the way DOWN, while
using ONLY the “Octave” knob to hear the sub-octave tone by itself.
Now every note you play will sound an octave lower, without the dou-
bled note above it. This way, it’s easy to play down to a 5-string’s low
B…or lower!
Using just a subtle touch of octave effect (“Dry” knob all the way up;
“Octave” knob set well below turn) is a great way to add dimen-
sion to your tone, in much the same way that a touch of reverb adds
color to a vocal track. It richens up the bass sound beautifully, and
can quickly become one of your favorite tone secrets!
