12. Tape In
TheseunbalancedRCAjacksaredesignedtowork
withsemiproaswellasprorecorders.Connectyour
2-tracktaperecorder’soutputshere,usingstandardhi-
RCAcables.Tolearnhowsignalsareroutedfromthese
inputs,seetapein(level)[40]onpage19.
Usethesejacksforconvenientplaybackofmixes.
You’llbeabletoreviewamix,andthenrewindandtry
anotherpasswithoutrepatchingordisturbingthemixer
levels.YoucanalsousethesejackswithaCDplayer
tofeedmusictoaPAsystembetweensets.
WARNING:Pushingtapetomainmix[41]
intheoutputsectioncancreateafeedback
path between tape input and tape output.
Makesureyourtapedeckisnotinrecord,record-pause
orinputmonitormodewhenyouengagethisswitch,
ormakesurethetapeinlevelknobisfullycounter-
clockwise(off).
13. Main Insert
These1/4"jacksareforconnectingserialeffectssuch
ascompressors,equalizers,de-essers,orlters.The
insertpointisafterthemixamps,butbeforethemain
mixfader.Insertcablesmustbewiredthusly:
Tip = send(outputtoeffectsdevice)
Ring = return(inputfromeffectsdevice)
Sleeve = commonground

Twosetsofjacksareprovidedforthemainoutputs:
1/4"TRSjacksandXLRjacks.Theseareusuallypatched
totheinputsofyour2-trackmixdowndeck(unless
you’vechosentousethetapeoutput[11]RCAjacks),
ortothehouseamplierduringlivesoundsessions.
Inaddition,theXLRmainoutshaveaswitch
tomatchthesignalleveltotheinputofthedevice
you'reconnectingthemto.Pushtheswitchintoreduce
theoutputby40dB,soyoucanfeedthemicinput
ofanothermixer,forexample.Leavetheswitchout
toconnecttoprofessional+4dBudevices.Tolearn
howsignalsareroutedtotheseoutputs,seepage18,
mainmixfader[37].
Tousetheseoutputstodrivebalancedinputs,
