9. CR Outs (Control Room Outputs)
These1/4"jacksareusuallypatchedtotheinputsof
acontrolroomamplieroraheadphonedistribution
amplier.Tolearnhowsignalsareroutedtothese
outputs,seectlroom/phones[43].
10. Phones Out (On Front Panel)
The1642VLZ4’sstereo1/4"phonesjackwill
drive any standard headphone to very loud levels.
Tolearnhowsignalsareroutedtotheseoutputs,see
CR/phones[43]onpage19.Ifyou’rewiringyourown
cableforthephonesoutput:
Tip = leftchannel
Ring = right channel
Sleeve = commonground
WARNING: When we say the headphone
ampisloud,we’renotkidding.Itcancause
permanenteardamage.Evenintermediate
levelsmaybepainfullyloudwithsomeearphones.
BE CAREFUL!AlwaysturntheCR/phones[43]knob
allthewaydownbeforeconnectingheadphones.Keepit
down until you’ve put the phones on. Then turn it up
slowly.Why?“Engineerswhofrytheirearsndthem-
selveswithshortcareers.”
11. Tape Out
TheseunbalancedRCAjackstapthemainmix
outputstomakesimultaneousrecordingandPAwork
moreconvenient.Connectthesetoyour2-track
recorder’s inputs. To learn how signals are routed
totheseoutputs,seemainmix[37]faderdetails
onpage18.
Mono:Ifyouwanttofeedamonosignaltoyourtape
deckorotherdevice,simplyusethe1/4"mono[15]
outputjack.

Y-cordadvice:Donotusethestereo“headphone-to-
left/right”splitteradapters.Usethetypethatsendthe
samesignaltotwoplaces;thetipofthesourceplug
feedsthetipsofbothdestinationplugs.

aparalleleffectsdevicesortotheinputsofstage
monitoramps.

Effects: Serial Or Parallel?
You’vehearduscarelesslytossaroundtheterms
“serial”and“parallel.”Here’swhatwemeanbythem:
“Serial”meansthattheentiresignalleavesthemixer
[insertsend],isroutedthroughtheeffectsdevice,and
returnstothemixer[insertreturn].Examples:com-
pressor/limiters,graphicequalizers.Line-levelsources
canalsobepatchedthroughaserialeffectsdevice
beforeorafterthemixer.
“Parallel”meansthataportionofthesignalinthe
mixeristappedofftothedevice(auxsend),processed
andreturnedtothemixer(stereoreturn)tobemixed
withtheoriginal“dry”signal.Thisway,multiple
channelscanallmakeuseofthesameeffectsdevice.
Examples:reverb,digitaldelay.
7. Stereo Returns
Thisiswheretoconnecttheoutputsofparallel
effectsdevices(orextraaudiosources).Thereare
fourstereoreturns.They’llacceptjustaboutanypro
orsemiproeffectsdeviceonthemarket.Tolearnhow
signalsareroutedfromtheseinputs,seestereoreturn
level[51]onpage22.
Mono:Ifyouhaveaneffectsdevicewithamono
output(onecord),plugthatintotheleftinputof
a stereo return and leave the right input unplugged.
Thatway,thesignalwillbesenttobothsides,
magicallyappearinginthecenterasamonosignal.
