114 5 ELECTRICAL PARTS The specific gravity is measured with a hy drometer the type shown in Fig 5 40 When making a reading of the measured value the electrolyte level in the hydrometer should be held at the eye level and the scale read at the fluid level Temperature of the electrolyte can be measured by a rod thermometer Fig 5 40 NOTE The relation between the battery capacity and the specific gravity residual capacity is shown in Fig 5 41 When the specific gravity is 1 189 at 20 C 68 F less than 50 capacity the residual capacity is small and if continued to be used in such a condition it will eventu ally lead to trouble as well as shortening the battery life therefore the battery should under such a condition be recharged as soon as possible Fig 5 41 Specific gravity 20 C 2 Residual capacity Fig 5 41 Specific gravity and residual capacity chart Inspecting the electrolyte level If the electrolyte level falls below the LOWER LEVEL remove the filler cap with a screw driver or an appropriate tool and fill the battery to the UPPER LEVEL with distilled water Do not fill beyond the UPPER LEVEL Whenever the vent pipe is removed during recharging it must be reconnected when the battery is installed Care should be exercized notto restrict the opening 4 Battery charging procedure a Charger 2 Battery Fig 5 42 Connection to Charger Fig 5 42 Connect the positive terminal of the battery colored red to the positive termi nal of the charger and the negative battery terminal to the negative terminal of the charger Fig 5 42
