5 5 ELECTRICAL STARTER 4 Instruction during use After adding the electrolyte to the battery the battery can be used in the same identical manner as the present dry cell battery a When the electrolyte level drops to the lower level mark add distilled water to bring the electrolyte level to the upper level mark Using the battery with insuf ficient electrolyte so that the plates are exposed will cause sulfation of the plates resulting in damage to the battery b During the use of the battery if the specific gravity of the electrolyte should drop below 1 200 at 20 C 68 F the battery should be charged as soon as possible The use of the battery In a discharged condition indicated by dimming of the lights will shorten the service life of the battery c Exercise care that the vent tube Is not blocked or pinched when installing the battery 5 5 ELECTRIC STARTER A Starting Circuit A push button type starter switch is located on the right handle bar which engages the solenoid switch in the starter circuit to close the starting circuit Approximately 120A current flows from the battery to turn the starting motor The starting motor is mounted on the front of the crankcase and drives the engine through a starting clutch and chain Fig 5 47 49i Fig 5 47 Starting motor Sua STAftTEP CHAPACIERlSnCS OUTPUTS SAW Fig 5 48
