7.4. Replacing the fuel filter
Do not smoke, expose to flames or cause sparks. Check to ensure there are no leaks, wipe
off all traces of fuel and ensure that any fumes have been dispersed before starting up the
generating set.
Dange
r
n Turn off the fuel tap (fig. A - mark 5 & fig. C - mark 1).
o Take note of the direction in which the fuel filter is installed (fig. A - mark 14 & fig. C - mark 2).
p Undo the two clips (fig. C - mark 3) and remove the fuel filter. Recover the surplus fuel in a suitable container.
q Install a new fuel filter, turning it in the correct direction and ensure that it is firmly retained in position by the two clips.
r Turn on the fuel tap and check that there are no leaks.
7.5. Cleaning the air filter
Never use petrol or low flash-point solvents for cleaning the air-filter element (risk of fire or explosion).
Attention
n Unscrew the wheel (fig. D - mark 1) and withdraw the air filter cover (fig. D - mark 2).
o Unscrew the filter elements nut (fig. D - mark 3) and extract them to clean them:
Paper element (fig. D - mark 4):
1) Tap the element lightly against a hard surface several times so as to remove any excess dirt.
OR: Apply a compressed -air hose blowing from the inside outwards.
Never try to remove dirt using a brush.
2) Replace the paper element if it is too dirty.
Foam elements (fig. D -mark 5):
1) Wash the element in a solution of household cleaner and hot water and then rinse it thoroughly.
OR: Wash it in a non-inflammable or high flash-point solvent. Leave the element to dry fully.
2) Immerse the element in clean engine oil and then remove any excess oil from it.
N.B.: The engine will smoke when it is started for the first time if too much oil is left in the foam.
p Check carefully that the two elements are not torn or pierced. Replace them if they are damaged.
q Carry out refitting following the removal process in reverse.
7.6. Starter battery maintenance
Never place the battery close to a flame or fire
Use only insulated tools
Never use sulphuric acid or acid water to top up the electrolyte level.
Danger
As the battery is maintenance-free, just check the condition and tightness of the connections and its general cleanliness.
7.7. Spark plug inspection
n Remove the cover (fig. E - mark 1) of the spark plugs (fig. E – mark 2), then remove the spark plugs with a spark plug spanner.
o Check the condition of the spark plugs:
If the electrodes are worn or if the insulation is cracked or
chipped:
If not:
p Replace the spark plugs.
q Install the new spark plugs and screw them in manually to
ensure that any cross-threading is avoided.
r Using a spark plug spanner, give the plugs a further ½ turn
after the spark plugs are set in position, in order to compress
the washers.
p Clean the spark plugs with a wire brush.
q Using a shim, check the "X" gap of the electrodes: This
should be between 0.7 to 0.8 mm.
r Check the condition of the washer.
s Install the spark plugs and screw them in manually in order to
avoid any cross-threading.
t Using a spark plug spanner, give the plugs a further 1/8 – 1/4
turn in order to compress the washers.
