What is blood pressure and what do the readings mean?

Blood pressure is a measure of the force of blood owing against the walls of the arteries. The blood pressure readings have two numbers.

(e.g., 118/78 mmHg (Systolic/Diastolic or SYS/DIA))

The highest pressure in the cycle is called the Systolic Blood Pressure. The lowest is the Diastolic Blood Pressure. Both are necessary to enable

healthcare professional to evaluate the status of your blood pressure.

A single measurement does not provide an accurate indication of your true blood pressure. Please use this Blood Pressure Diary to keep records of

several readings over a certain period of time.

Ideally, we should all have a blood pressure below 120 over 80 (120/80). At this level, we have a much lower risk of heart disease or stroke.
