9.5 GRASS THINNING USING A GRASS BLADE
9.5.1 Check before starting
Examine the blade for cracks in the base of the teeth or the area near the center hole.
Replace the blade if it shows cracks (see chapter 5.3 Blade assembly (Fig. 10)).
Check that the support flange is not cracked due to fatigue or due to being tightened too
much. Replace the support flange if it appears cracked (see chapter 5.3 Blade assembly
(Fig. 10)).
Ensure that the retaining nut (A, Fig. 10) has not lost its holding capacity. The tightening
force of the retaining nut must be 25 Nm.
Check that the blade cover (A, Fig. 4) is not damaged or cracked. Replace the blade cover if
it appears cracked.
NOTE
A grass blade is used for all types of tall or coarse grass.
9.5.2 Working methods
WARNING
Avoid kickback as it can cause serious injury. Kickback is the sudden lateral or
forward movement of the machine which occurs if the blade comes into contact
with objects such as large branches or stones, or if a piece of wood hits the wood
blade during cutting. Contacting a foreign object can also result in loss of brush
cutter control.
Always follow the safety instructions. The brushcutter should only be used to cut
grass or small bushes. Only cut wood with the appropriate blade. Do not cut
metal, plastics, masonry, or non-wood building materials. Cutting other types of
material is prohibited. Do not use the brushcutter as a lever to lift, move or
break objects, nor lock it on fixed supports. It is prohibited to fit any tools or
applications to the brushcutter PTO other than those specified by the
Manufacturer.
Avoid cutting near fences, building walls, tree trunks, stones or other objects
that may cause the machine to jolt or damage the blade. We recommends use of
the nylon line heads for such jobs. In addition, be alert to an increased
possibility of ricochets in such situations.
Never use the machine with the cutting device in a position perpendicular to the
ground.
Never operate the machine with the blade loose. If the blade becomes loose
after being properly secured, discontinue use immediately. The retaining nut
may be worn or damaged and should be replaced. Never use unapproved parts
to secure the blade. If the blade continues to loosen, see your dealer.
The grass is cut down with a sideways, swinging movement, where the movement from
right-to-left is the thinning stroke and the movement from left-to-right is the return stroke.
Cutting is done with the left side of the blade, as shown in Fig. 25.
If the blade is angled to the left when thinning grass, the grass will collect in a line, which
makes it easier to collect, e.g. by raking.
