This User’s Guide provides instruction for installing the Switch, making the proper connections to

an Ethernet network, and setting the configurations using the built-in console interface.

Conventions

For simplicity, this documentation uses the terms “Switch” (first letter upper case) to refer to both

the DES-1218R and DES-1226R Ethernet Switch, and “switch” (first letter lower case) to refer to all

Ethernet switches, including the DES-1218R and DES-1226R. When a distinction between the two

models is necessary, the model number will be given to distinguish between them.

Overview of this User’s Guide

♦ Chapter 1, “Introduction.” Describes the Switch and its features.

♦ Chapter 2, “Unpacking and Setup.” Helps you get started with the basic installation of the

Switch.

♦ Chapter 3, “Identifying External Components.” Describes the front panel, rear panel, side

panels, and LED indicators of the Switch.

♦ Chapter 4, “Connecting the Switch.” Tells how you can connect the Switch to your

Ethernet/Fast Ethernet/Gigabit network.

♦ Chapter 5, “Switch Management.” Talks about Local Console Management via the RS-232

DCE console port and other aspects about how to manage the Switch.

♦ Chapter 6, “Management Concepts.” A more detailed discussion of some of the management

features of the Switch including, Port Trunk Groups, VLANs, and IEEE 802.1p Priority

Queues.

♦ Appendix A, “Technical Specifications.” Lists the technical specifications of the Switch.

♦ Appendix B, “Cables and Connectors.” Describes the RJ-45 receptacle/connector, straight and

crossover cables and standard pin assignments.

♦ Appendix C, “Cable Lengths.” Contains chart for fiber-optic and copper cable maximum

distances.
