outputsorthephones[11]outputs.Theonlydifference
isthatwhilethelisteninglevelsarecontrolledbythe
controlroom/submix[32]knob,themetersreadthe
sourcemixbeforethatcontrol,givingyoutherealfacts
atalltimes,evenifyou’renotlisteningatall.
Thankstothe802VLZ4’swidedynamicrange,youcan
getagoodmixwithpeaksashinganywherebetween
–20and+10dBonthemeters.Mostampliersclipat
about+10dB,andsomerecordersaren’tsoforgiving
either.Forbestreal-worldresults,trytokeepyour
peaksbetween“0”and“+6”.
Remember,audiometersarejusttoolstohelpassure
youthatyourlevelsare“intheballpark.”Youdon’thave
tostareatthem(unlessyouwantto).
A Word About Aux
Sendsareoutputs,andreturnsareinputs.The
channelaux[28]knobstapsthesignaloffeach
channel.Thesumoftheauxsignalsissenttotheaux
master[37]knobbeforegoingtotheauxsend[15]
output.
Thisoutputcanbefedtotheinputsofareverbor
otherdevice.Fromthere,theoutputsofthisexternal
devicearefedbacktothemixer’sstereoreturn[8]
jacks,throughthestereoreturn[38]levelcontrol,
andnallydeliveredtothemainmix.
So,theoriginal“dry”signalsgofromthechannels
tothemainmix,andtheaffected“wet”signalsgofrom
thestereoreturn[8]tothemainmix.Oncemixed
together,thedryandwetsignalscombinetocreate
aglorioussound.So,armedwiththisknowledge,
let’svisittheauxiliaryworld:
36. Pre or Post (Aux)
Besidesbeingusedtoworkeffectsintoyourmix,aux
sendsserveanothercriticalrole—thatofdelivering
cuemixestostagemonitors,somusicianscanhear
whatthey’redoing.Onthe802VLZ4,auxsendcanplay
eitherrole,dependingonthepositionofthisswitch.
Withthisswitchout(disengaged),auxsendwilltapa
channelpre-faderandpre-mute/alt3-4,meaningthatno
matterhowyoumanipulatethosecontrolsastheyfeed
themainmix,theauxsendwillcontinuetobeltoutthat
channel’ssignal.Thisisthepreferredmethodforsetting
upstagemonitorfeeds,asitslevelisnotaffectedby
changestothechannel'slevelcontrols.EQsettingswill
affectallauxsends.It'sabitlikesettinguptwoPAs,
oneataniceleveltokeepyourbandhappy,andoneat
aniceleveltoplaytoyouraudience.Thelevelsofeach
areindependentofeachother.
Withtheswitchin,theauxsendbecomesanordinary
effectssend—post-fader(level)andpost-mute/alt
3-4.Thisisamustforeffectssends,sinceyouwantthe
levelsofyour“wet”signalstofollowthelevelofthe
“dry,"keepingthematthesameratio.Forexample,you
donotwantareturnedechotostayatonelevel,when
youturnachanneldown;youwantittogodownaswell.
Postmute/alt3-4meansthatwhenachannelismuted,
itsauxsendtoanexternalprocessorisalsomuted.
37. Aux Master Send
Thisknobprovidesoveralllevelcontrolofauxsend,
justbeforeit’sdeliveredtotheauxsend[15]output.
Thisknobgoesfromoff(turnedfullydown),tounity
gainatthecenter,with10dBofextragain(turnedfully
up).Youmayneverneedtheadditionalgain,buthereit
isanyway.
Thisistheknobtoturnupwhentheleadsinger
glaresatyou,pointsathisstagemonitor,andsticks
histhumbupintheair.(Ifhestuckhisthumbdown,
you’dturntheknobdown,butthatneverhappens.)
38. Stereo Return
Thiscontrolsetstheoveralllevelofeffectsreceived
fromthestereoreturn[8]inputs.Thiscouldbethe
affected(wet)processedsignalreturningfroman
effectsprocessor,orthestereosignalsfromanother
synthorsource.Thiscontrolisdesignedtohandlea
widerangeofsignallevels,fromoff,tounitygainatthe
center,with20dBgainfullyclockwise,tocompensate
forlow-leveleffectsorsources.
Normally,setthisknobatthecenter,andsetthe
effectsdeviceorsource'soutputcontroltowhatever
theycallunitygain(checktheirmanual).Ifthatturns
outtobetooloudortooquiet,adjusttheeffectsdevice
orsource'soutputs,notthemixer.Thatway,themixer’s
knobsareeasytorelocateatthecenter.
Signalspassingthroughthiscontrolproceeddirectly
tomainmix.Thestereoreturnsdonothavemute/alt3-4
switches,soifyouwantthesesignalstogettothe
alt3-4mix,you’llhavetopatchtheeffectsdevice’s
outputsintooneofthestereochannelsinsteadofthe
stereoreturn,andmute/altthosechannels.
39. Power LED
ThisLEDwilllightwhenthemixerisconnectedto
alivepowersupply,andthepowerswitchisturnedon.
Thisletsyouknowthatthemixer'sinternalcircuits
areturnedon,andallreadyforaction.
Turningoffthepowerswitchwillturnoffthemixer
andthisLEDwillgoout.
