Sas is a serial point to point enterprise level device interface that leverages the proven scsi protocol set sas is a convergence of the advantages of sata scsi and fibre channel and it is the future mainstay of the enterprise and high end workstation storage markets sas offers a higher bandwidth per pin than parallel scsi and it improves signal and data integrity 10

Although you can have up to 16 virtual drives per drive group and up to 128 drive groups on most of the controllers a limit of 64 virtual drives exists on those controllers 13

These raid controllers support 64 bit logical block addressing lba which makes it possible to connect a large number of drives to the raid controller directly and through expanders however the actual number of drives that you can attach depends on the limits listed in this table rather than by actual raid volume capacity 13
