CHAPTER 1
Introducing the EMS
1.1 Element Management System (EMS) Overview
The NetAtlas GPON Manager Element Management System (EMS) allows you to manage ZyXEL’s
GPON devices. The NetAtlas EMS consists of the EMS Server and the EMS Remote Client as shown
in the following figure. The EMS Remote Client runs on computers (A) and communicates with and
manages the GPON devices (C) through the EMS Server (B).

The EMS retrieves management information from devices using Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP, RFC 1901).
