5 20 Chapter 5 Frame suspension and final drive A Side clearance B Side clearance 1 Shims the chain and install a master link or it may Creak while me motorc is in motion possibly causing rear wheel lockup and loss of contr the motorcycle 1 Disconnect the shift pedal arm from its shaft on the engine Chapter 2 2 Remove the bolts securing the engine sprocket cover to engine case Take the sprocket cover off see illustration 3 Remove the rear wheel see Chapter 6 4 Lift the chain off the engine sprocket 5 Detach the swingarm from the frame by following the first Steps of Section 11 Pull the swingarm back far enough to allow chain to slip between the frame and the front of the swingarm Cleaning 13 2 Remove the Allen bolts arrows and take oil the engine sprocket cover 6 Soak the chain in kerosene paraffin or approximately five or minutes Caution Don t use gasoline petrol solvent or other clea fluids Don t use high pressure water Remove the chain wipe it then blow dry it with compressed air immediately The entire proc shouldn t take longer than ten minutes if it does the O rings in chain rollers could be damaged Installation them with lithium base waterproof wheel bearing grease If they re worn or damaged take the swingarm to a Yamaha dealer or motorcycle repair shop for bearing replacement 5 If you re working on a YX600 Radian measure the length of the swingarm bushing sec illustration If it s not within the range listed in this Chapter s Specifications replace the bushing 6 If you re working on an FJ600 an early XJ600 or a YX600 Radian calculate the swingarm side clearance Install the bushing in the swmgarm so it s perfectly centered see illustration Install the shims so they re flush with the ends of the bushing and measure the gaps between the shims and swingarm The combined total of the two gaps is swingarm side clearance If it s not the same as the value listed in this Chapter s Specifications install thicker or thinner shims to correct it Available shim thicknesses are listed in this Chapter s Specifi cations 13 Drive chain removal cleaning and installation Refer to illustration 13 2 Removal Warning The original equipment chain has no master link Don t cut 7 Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure Tighten suspension fasteners and the engine sprocket cover bolts to torque values listed in this Chapter s Specifications Tighten the axle nut to the torque listed in the Chapter 6 Specifications 8 Lubricate the chain following the procedure described in Ch ter 1 Caution Use only the recommended engine oil 14 Sprockets check and replacement 1 Set the bike on its centerstand if equipped or support it secu upright with the rear wheel off the ground 2 Whenever the drive chain is inspected the sprockets should inspected also II you are replacing the chain replace the sprockets well Likewise if the sprockets are in need of replacement insta new chain also 3 Remove the engine sprocket cover see Section 13 4 Check the wear pattern on the sprockets see Chapter 1 If sprocket teeth are worn excessively replace the chain and sprocke 5 To remove the rear sprocket remove the rear wheel see Ch ter 6 Unscrew the Allen bolts and nuts holding the sprocket to wheel coupling and lift it off Check the condition of the rubber dam under the rear wheel coupling see Section 15
