Chapter 1 Tune up and routine maintenance 1 21 18 25 Turn the camshafts so the lobes are upward but be sure to turn them only in the indicated directions so the lobe won t drag across the adjusting tool 18 27 A universal adjusting tool can be used to adjust the valves The wedge A is used to make a gap so the holder B can be installed between the camshaft and lifter be sure the tool rests on the lifter and not on the adjusting shim 18 28 Push the wedge between the cam lobe and shim to create a gap then insert the holder 18 29 Pry the shim loose from the lifter with the wedge 18 30 Lift the shim out with a magnet 24 Install the tool on the valve lifter to hold it down Note Be sure the lifter bears against the tool only not the adjusting shim 25 Turn the camshaft so the lobe points upward see illustration Note The camshaft must rotate inward toward the center of the engine so it doesn t drag on the holding tool The tool will hold the valve lifter down forming a gap so the shim can be removed 26 Slip a small screwdriver into the lifter notch under the shim and pry it up out of the lifter With universal valve adjusting tool Refer to illustrations 18 27 18 28 and 18 29 27 If you re using a universal valve adjusting tool see illustration turn the camshaft so the lobe of the valve to be adjusted points upward see illustration 18 21 18 31 There s a thickness mark on the underside of each valve shim be sure to place the marked side of the shim downward during installation 28 Push the wedge of the valve adjusting tool between the cam lobe and adjusting shim so it pushes the lifter down slightly see illustration Slip the holder between the camshaft and lifter then pull out the wedge 29 Slip the wedge tool between the adjusting shim and the lifter see illustration This will dislodge the adjusting shim All models Refer to illustrations 18 30 18 31 18 32a and 18 32b 30 Take the shim out with a magnet see illustration 31 Determine the thickness of the shim you removed It should be marked on the bottom of the shim see illustration but the ideal way is to measure it with a micrometer Note If the number on the shim
