The V-ON Concept
Video surveillance can be a tremendous help to enhance public safety and property security. During the chaos
of an emergency, IP surveillance networks might fail to deliver and instead lose key images within seconds. In
mission-critical applications, to prevent video loss from surveillance networks at all times, Moxa V-ON
(Video-Always-ON Networking) technology overcomes multicast limitations.
What is V-ON?
Moxa V-ON is a technology that enables layer 2 video multicast traffic redundancy under 50ms and layer 3
routing redundancy under 300ms to support nonstop security surveillance, especially in mission-critical
applications.
The figure below shows a traditional network with standard RSTP, VRRP, and IGMP protocol for multicast video
stream. However, standard IGMP is not optimized for multicast video transmission. Once a network is down, a
ring transmission path changes in a few seconds, but the recovery time of a multicast transmission path may
be up to 125 seconds. It’s not allowed in many mission-critical video applications.
