AnetworkadministratorcanuseWakeonLANtoturnonacomputerfromamanagementconsole.
WhenWakeonLANisusedwithnetworkmanagementsoftware,manyfunctions,suchasdatatransfer,
softwareupdates,andFlashupdatesofUEFIBIOS,canbeperformedremotelywithoutremoteattendance.
Thisupdatingprocesscanbedoneafternormalworkinghoursandonweekends,tosavetimeandincrease
productivity.Usersarenotinterruptedduringnormalworkinghours,andLANtrafciskepttoaminimum.
IfacomputeristurnedonbytheWakeonLANfunction,theNetworkBootsequenceisused.
AssetIDEEPROM
TheAssetIDEEPROMcontainsinformationaboutthesystem,includingitscongurationandtheserial
numbersofkeycomponents.Italsoincludesanumberofblankeldsinwhichyoucanrecordinformation
abouttheendusersinyournetwork.
Settingmanagementfeatures
Toenablethenetworkadministratortocontrolyourcomputerremotely,youmustcongurethenetwork
interfacebysettingthesystem-managementfeaturesintheThinkPadSetupprogram.Youcancongure
thefollowingfunctionsintheprogram:
•WakeonLAN
•NetworkBootsequence
•Flashupdate
Ifanadministratorpassword(supervisorpassword)hasbeenset,youwillneedtospecifyitwhenyoustart
ThinkPadSetuptousethesefunctions.
WakeonLAN
WhentheWakeonLANfeatureisenabledonacomputerthatisconnectedtoaLAN,anetworkadministrator
canstartthecomputerremotelyfromamanagementconsole,usingremotenetwork-managementsoftware.
Whenyourcomputerisnotunderthenetworkadministrator'ssystemmanagement,youcandisableWake
onLAN.
ToenableordisableWakeonLAN,dothefollowing:
1.StartThinkPadSetup.
2.SelectCong.TheCongsubmenuisdisplayed.
3.SelectNetwork.TheNetworkitemsubmenuisdisplayed.
4.ForWakeOnLAN,selectoneofthefollowing:ACOnly,ACandBattery,orDisabled.
5.PressF10tosavechangesandexit.
NetworkBootsequence
Whenyourcomputeristurnedonremotely,thesystemwilltrytobootfromthedevicethatisspeciedinthe
NetworkBootsetting,andthenfollowthebootorderlistontheBootmenu.
Todeneasequence,dothefollowing:
1.OntheThinkPadSetupprogrammenu,selectStartup.Thesubmenuisdisplayed.
2.SelectNetworkBootandpresstheEnterkey.Thebootdevicelistisdisplayed.
