TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE
WARNING
To avoid injury from an accidental start, turn the switch OFF and always remove the plug from the power
source before making any adjustments.
Consult Hitachi Authorized Service Center if for any reason the motor will not run.
SYMPTOM POSSIBLE CAUSES CORRECTIVE ACTION
Snipe
(gouging at ends of board)
1. Dull blades.
2. Inadequate support of long boards.
3. Uneven force on cutterhead.
4. Rollercase not level with base.
5. Lumber not butted properly.
1. Replace blades per instructions.

2. Support long boards. See Avoiding
Snipe.
3. Gently push board when board is in
contact with only one feed roller. See
Avoiding Snipe.

Adjust rollercase. See Adjusting.
5. Butt each piece of stock end-to-end as
boards pass through planer.
Fuzzy grain Planing wood with a high moisture content
Remove high moisture content from wood
by drying
Torn grain 1.
Too heavy a cut

Uneven depth of cut
(side to side)
Rollercase not level with Planer Rollercase not level. See ADJUSTING.
Rollercase elevation
adjusts with difficulty
1. Gears dirty
2. Elevation screws dirty
3. Gears, elevation screws worn
4. Friction between rollercase and covers
5. Rollercase not parallel with planer base
6. Rollercase lock engaged
1. Clean and lubricate gears.
2. Clean and lubricate elevation screws.
3. Replace gears, elevation screw.
4. Clean and lubricate.

Board feeds inside, but
stops moving past the
outfeed roller
1. Outfeed rollers cannot rotate due
to clogging of chips

Too much pressure on the
cutterhead from long workpiece
1. Clear the clogging, use dust collector
chip chute.
2. Use support stands to support
workpiece longer than 24” (610mm).
Board thickness does not
match depth of cut scale
Indicator not set correctly Adjust indicator and tighten securely.
Chain jumping
1. Sprockets worn
2. Chain worn
1. Replace sprockets.
2. Replace chain.
Planer will not operate
1. No power to planer
2. Motor overload protection

3. Defective or loose switch or
wiring.

Belt slipping Loose belt
Replace belt, see Replacing V-Belt.
Rollercase connot be

Workpiece thickness gauge setting
restricts rollercase movement.
Reset thickness gauge setting.
