CHAPTER 1
Introducing the VES-1616FE-55A
This chapter introduces the main applications and features of the VES-1616FE-55A. It also
introduces the ways you can manage the VES-1616FE-55A.
1.1 Overview
The VES-1616FE-55A is a stand-alone layer-2 VDSL2 IP DSLAM.
The mounting tab on the back allows the VES-1616FE-55A to be hung on a wall or in a higher
position. You can place the VES-1616FE-55A outdoors closer to the users and provide extra
security with the cabinet door locked.
You could place the VES-1616FE-55A outdoors (on a telephone pole or in a street cabinet for
example) in residential areas that are too far away from the ISP to receive DSL services.
Residents only need to be within range of the VES-1616FE-55A (not the ISP) to receive high-
speed VDSL Internet access, and have enough bandwidth for data, voice, and video services.
In the following example, the VES-1616FE-55A (labeled Z) is placed a considerable distance
from the ISP. The VES-1616FE-55A is connected to a backbone switch (labeled A) using a
fiber-optic cable. The fiber connection allows distances of up to several kilometers (depending
on your transceivers).

Alternatively, you can deploy the VES-1616FE-55A in a building and connect it to a backbone
switch. In the following example, the VES-1616FE-55A (labeled Z) is connected to a nearby
backbone switch (labeled A) using an Ethernet cable. The Ethernet connection is a suitable
link for distances up to 100 meters (328 feet).
