1.2 Ways to Manage the MSC
Use any of the following methods to manage the MSC.
Web Configurator. This is GUI-based management using a (supported) web browser. See Chapter
3 on page 61.
Command Line Interface. Use line commands through Telnet or the console port to manage the
MSC. See Chapter 19 on page 643.
Editable plain text based configuration file
FTP for firmware upgrades and configuration backup/restore (Chapter 39 on page 1087).
SNMP. The device can be monitored by an SNMP manager. See Chapter 15 on page 563 and
Section 36.4 on page 1048.
1.3 Features
This section introduces key IES series features.
Management Switch Card Redundancy
You can install two management switch cards to increase system reliability. The two management
switch cards must have the same types of uplink and subtending connections. One management
switch card is active and the other acts as a standby.
The first management switch card installed is active. If both management switch cards are installed
at the same time, the management switch card in the lower numbered slot is active. Whenever the
active management switch card cannot operate (whether it is removed, restarts or crashes), the
standby management switch card becomes active.
Gigabit Ethernet Ports
The Gigabit Ethernet ports allow the switch to connect to another WAN switch or daisy-chain to
other switches.
SFP Slots
Install SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) transceivers in these slots to connect to other Ethernet
switches at longer distances than the Ethernet port.
XFP Slots
Install XFP (10 Gigabit Small Form-factor Pluggable) hot-swappable optical transceivers in these
slots for 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections.
SFP+ Slots
Install SFP+ (10 Gigabit Small Form-factor Pluggable) hot-swappable optical transceivers in these
slots for 10 Gigabit Ethernet connections.
