When your baby is ready for solid foods, you can
start by mixing cereal, such as baby rice or oats,
maize noodles, millet or well-mashed cooked rice,
with your baby’s usual milk. In addition, you can
purée cooked vegetables or fruit to a smooth
consistency (like runny yoghurt). To begin, offer
just a few teaspoons, during or after a milk feed,
once a day.
With time you can begin to offer solid foods
before the milk feed and then build up on the
quantity of solid foods given. You can also vary
the food consistency by adding less milk or water
to thicken it. At the same time, start to offer
different foods progressively from two to three
mealtimes each day to enable your baby
to experience new tastes.
What the expert says…
“It may take a little time before babies can learn
to eat solid foods. The reason is that, when
suckling at the breast or when feeding from a
bottle, babies push their tongue forward. In the
same way, they will make this movement when
being spoon fed resulting in food coming straight
back out of their mouths. This does not mean
that they dislike the food given to them; they just
need time to learn how to use their tongues to
push food to the back of their mouths where
they can swallow it.
