Soft chews
Once your child is used to purée or soft mashed
foods, you can start to introduce roughly mashed
food. By 6 months of age most babies can manage
soft lumpy foods, even though they have no teeth.
To stimulate chewing practice at this stage, you can
also offer soft “nger foods” in stick-shaped pieces
such as toast crusts, soft ripe fruit sticks, cooked
vegetable sticks and cooked pasta shapes. This
will help your baby to be ready for chopped and
minced food as he or she gets closer to the next
stage. Be guided by your baby and never leave him
or her unattended when eating.
Babies grow quickly thus need nutrient rich foods. At
this stage your baby will begin eating larger quantities
and needs a higher intake of nutrients, especially iron
which is present in food group 2 below. Ideally, foods
from the 4 food groups should be given:
1. Starchy foods – potatoes, rice, pasta and
other cereals
2. Meat, sh and alternatives such as eggs
and pulses (dhal, lentils etc.)
3. Fruits and vegetables
4. Dairy products full fat yogurt and cheese.
Full fat milk can also be used during cooking.
What the expert says…
“During this stage babies are developing their oral
motor skills by learning how to chew soft lumps and
move food around the mouth with the use of their
tongue. When you start to introduce soft chews,
some lumps might be big enough to trigger a gag
reex, resulting in coughing or even vomiting, to clear
the back of the mouth. Don’t confuse this reaction
with a dislike for a certain type of food. Keep offering
foods of different textures so that your baby has the
opportunity to learn how to eat these foods.
The wider the variety of foods babies are given
during weaning, the more open they will be to
trying new foods. Scientic evidence shows that the
babys preference for some foods is also the result
of repeated exposure, so do not stop offering foods
that you think your baby is rejecting. Keep offering
the food to your baby from time to time. It may take
several tries at a new taste (up to 15 tastes in some
cases) before your baby accepts it, so don’t give up
too soon. It takes fewer exposures to establish a
preference the younger your baby is, so be bold
and try many different foods!”
