performance. S.M.A.R.T. software resides on both the disk drive and
the host computer. The disk drive software monitors the internal per-
formance of the motors, media, heads, and electronics of the drive. The
host software monitors the overall reliability status of the drive. If a de-
vice failure is predicted, the host software, through the Client WORKS
S.M.A.R.T applet, warns the user of the impending condition and ad-
vises appropriate action to protect the data.
