CHAPTER 1
Introducing the VOP
This chapter introduces the main applications and features of the VOP. It also
introduces the ways you can manage the VOP.
1.1 Overview
The VOP is a Voice over IP (VoIP) module for your IES-1000 IP DSLAM.
The VOP VoIP module is perfect for providing phone service via VoIP to
subscribers while minimizing costs. One VOP provides VoIP telephony service for
up to 24 subscribers over existing POTS telephone wiring.
The line to and from the user carries either voice alone, or both voice and data
(DSL) signals. When used in conjunction with the AAM1212 ADSL module, the
AAM1212’s internal splitter separates the high frequency DSL signal from the
voice band signal and feeds the voice band signal to the VOP via the AAM1212’s
CO port.
The VOP supports SIP (the Session Initiation Protocol). Each VOP is an individual
SIP UA (User Agent) for each physical port. It has an IP address for SIP and RTP
protocols to communicate with SIP proxy servers.
Use the Telco-50 connector pin assignments in Section 33.3 on page 250 along
with the directions and safety warnings in the IES-1000’s User's Guide to install
the module and make the necessary connections.
1.1.1 Voice Features
The VOP provides 24 aggregated lines of POTS connectivity, designed to connect
the subscriber with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN).
Each telephone line interface is a Foreign Exchange Subscriber (FXS) port
connecting to the subscriber's telephone via copper wire. The analog voice signal
from the subscriber is converted to voice data packets and transmitted towards
the callee across the IP packet-switched network.
