7.2.
Pumps with stuffing box
On starting for the first time, slightly loosen the
stuffing box gland so that seal is decompressed.
Then adjust the stuffing box gland to obtain a nor-
mal degree of dripping which will indicate that the
seal is lubricated correctly.
The packing must be replaced when its sealing
properties have considerably decreased.
A packing which has become too compressed har-
dened and dry will cause the shaft sleeve to wear.
7.3.
Ball bearings and lubrication
For the motor see separate instructions (if sup-
plied).
Pump bearings are lubricated with high quality
lithium soap grease.
Initial lubrication at the factory will be sufficient for
5,000 hours operation. After this period, the shaft and
bearings should be dismantled for checking, cleaning
(bearings, covers and support have to be washed with
diluent) and re-lubrication with fresh grease
.
In heavy working conditions (over 8 hours/day, in
dusty or humid environments or with high ambient
temperature), re-lubrication (add grease) should
be performed by means of the lubricating nipples
at least once every six months for operation at
2,900-3,600 r.p.m. and at least once a year for
operation at 1,450-1,800 r.p.m.
Perform lubrication while motor is running.
The table on page 42 indicates the types of bea-
rings of the different pumps and the quality of
grease for re-lubrication in grams (g).
Replacing bearings (see section 8).
Mount the bearings cold on the shaft with a press
(or by heating only the ring hole to a maximum
temperature of 70 °C), oiling slightly the surface of
seatings and using a tube of soft metal which must
only come into contact with the internal ring of the
bearing that has to be mounted.
For particularly heavy duty, use bearings with C3
clearance, lubricated with grease suitable for ope-
ration temperatures of the pump. Consult the sup-
plier of the bearings.
7.4.
When the pump is not in use
ATTENTION: when the pump is not used, it
must be completely drained if there is a risk of
freezing (fig. 9).
Before re-starting the unit, make sure the shaft is
not jammed by incrustation or deposits and com-
pletely refill the pump casing with liquid.
Disconnect electrical power before any
servicing operation (only adjustment of
the
stuffing box, section 7.2, and lubrica-
tion procedure, section 7.3, may be
performed, with caution, while motor is running).
8. Disassembly
Close the suction and delivery gate valves and
drain the pump casing before dismantling the pump
(fig. 9).
The motor and all internal parts can be dismantled
without removing the pump casing from the pipes
(fig. 10).
Disassembly sequence with normal coupling wi-
thout spacer (fig. 10):
1) coupling guard;
2) motor;
3) support foot (if fitted);
4) on removing the nuts (14.28) the bearing hou-
sing and shaft unit, with impeller and casing cover,
is completely removed.
For disassembly and reassembly, see construction
in the cross section drawing (page 34).
9. Spare parts
When ordering spare parts, please quote data stam-
ped on name-plate, part designation (page 34) and
the position number of each spare part required (in
accordance with cross section drawing on page 34).
Any pumps that require inspection/re-
pair must be drained and carefully
cleaned inside and outside before di-
spatch/submission.
