Taper roller bearing in steering head - removing and
installing
Remove the complete telescopic fork (see page
31-11.0).
Pull out bearing outer race at top with Kukko puller,
BMW
005560,
in conjunction with
BMW
support ring
31
4800
(arrow).
Pull in bearing outer race
attop
with spindie
offrame
alignmentgauge (1) and spacer (2). BMW31
4820,
togetherwith ship and hex nut (3) as far as stop.
Repeatthe process
forthe
lower bearing outer race.
To remove the lower taper roller bearing, heat up the
lowerfork bridgeto app. 120-130°
C.
Knock
or
press out the steering head tube downwards.
Insert steering head tube again immediately.
Note:
Mark the installed posilion of Ihe sleering head
lube
on
the fork bridge. Siol is for sleering lock.
Heal
up
laper
roller bearing 10 80°C before inslalling,
inslall ring (arrow) and
laper
roller bearing.
When installing:
There must be no play
al
Ihe ring (arrow) between bearing
and fork bridge.

Drive upper
laper
roller bearing evenly down from
Ihe
bearing mounling wilh an arbor inserted Ihrough
Ihe
holes
in
the adjusting ring.
When installing:
Heal up
laper
roller bearin 10 80°C before inslalling, inslall
ring and
laper
roller bearing.
There
musl
be no play at Ihe ring belween bearing and
fork bridge.
