A
WARNING
The
battery
gives
off
exp
losive
gases; keep sparks. flam es and
cigarettes
away
. Provide adequate
vent
ilat
ion
w hen
cha
rging
.
The
battery
contains
sulfur
ic acid (electrolyte). Contact
with
skin
or
eyes may cause severe
burns.
Wear
protective
cloth
ing
and a face sh
ield
.

skin, flush

water
.

in yo ur eyes, flu sh

utes and call a physician

or

age,
remove

battery
,
give
it a
full
charge
, and
store
it in a
cool,
dry
space. For maxi
mu
m se
rvice
lif
e,
charge
the
stored
battery
every
two
weeks
.
F
or
a
battery
remai
ning
in a
stored
motor
cycle, disconnect
the
negat
ive
battery
cable
from
the
battery
termina
l.
The maintenance free
battery
must
be replaced
when
it reaches
the
end
of
its service
life
.
The battery can be
dam
aged
if
ove rcha rged
or
underc
harged, or if left
to
discharge f
or
a long
period.
These sa

ditions

to sh
ort
ening
the
"l
ife spa
n"
of
the
battery
. Even under normal use,
the
p
erf
orman
ce of the batt
ery
det
erio
rates after 2
-3
years.
Battery
voltage
may
recover a
fter
battery
charging, but u
nder
heavy
load, battery
voltage
w ill d
rop
quickly
and even
tu
al-
ly die out. F
or
this
reason,
the
charging
system
is
ofte
n
suspected
as
the
prob
lem
. Battery overcharge
often
results
from
~
problems in the
battery
itse
lf
,
which
may
appear
to
be an overcharg
ing
symptom
. If
one
of
the
battery
cells is s
horted
..:;
and battery
voltage
does
not
increase,
the
reg
ulator
/rectifier
supplies
excess
voltage
to
the
batt ery.
Under
these
condi-
tio
ns,
the
elect
rolyte
level
goes
dow
n quickly.
B
efore
trou bleshooting
the
charg
ing
sys
tem,
check
for
proper use and
mai
nt
enanc
e
of
th e batte ry. Check if
the
battery is
fr
equentl
y under he
avy
load, such as ha
vin
g the headl
ight
and taillig ht ON for lon g
period
s of
tim
e w itho ut ridi ng the
m
oto
rcycle.
The
battery
will
self-discharge
when
the
motorcycle
is not in use. For th is reason, c
harge
the
battery
every
two
weeks
to
p
revent
sulfat
ion
from
occurr
ing
.
When checking the chargi ng
system,
a
lways

ow the steps in the
tro
ubles
hooting
f
low
chart
(page
16-3).

or
battery cha
rging,
do not exceed the c
hargi
ng current and
time
specified on
the
battery. Use of excess
ive
current or
cha
rgin
g time may da
mage
the battery.

Refer to
the
instruction
of
the
Operation
Manual
for
the
recommended
battery
tester
. The
recommended
batt
ery
te
ster
puts
a
" load" on
the
batt
ery
so that
the
a
ctual
battery
cond
ition
of
the
load
can be
measured
.
