low values according to the capacity and condition of the battery FIG C 3 INSTALLATION ASSEMBLY FIG A Unpack the battery charger and assemble separatepartscontained in the package Models on wheels are to be set in a vertical position the POSITIONING THE BATTER Y CHARGER During operation position the battery charger on a stable surface and make sure that there is no obstruction to air passage through the openings provided toen sure sufficient ventilation CONNECTIONTOTHEMAIN SUPPLY The battery charger should be connected only and exclusively to a power source with the neutral lead connectedto earth Check that the mains voltage is the same as the voltage of the equipment Check that the power supply is protected by systems such as fuses or automatic switches sufficient to support the maximum absorption of the equipment The connection to the main supply has to be made using a suitable cable If you put an extension to the primary cable the section should be adequate and in any case never less than that of the cable suppl ied You always have to earth the equipment with the yellow green wire contained in the main cable indicated by the label 1 while the other two wires should be connected to the mains 4 OPERATION BEFORE CHARGING NB Before charging check that the capacity of the battery Ah which is to be charged Is not inferior to that reported on the data table C mln Follow the instructions taking great care to respect theordergiven below Remove the caps of the battery charger if foreseen so asto let thegas produced go out Check that the level of the electrolyte covers the plates of the battery If these were not covered add distilled water and cover them up to 5 10 mm WARNING USE THE MAXIMUM CAUTION DURING THIS OPERATION AS THE ELECTROLYTE IS A HIGHLY CORROSIVE ACID Please remember that the exact charge status of the battery can only be determined by using a densimeter which allows measurement of the specific gravity of the electrolyte the following indicate approximate density valuesforthe solute Kg I at 20 c 1 28 charged battery 1 21 half charged battery 1 14 flat battery With the power supply cable disconnected from the power outlet position the 6 12 V or 12 24 V charge switch if present according to the rated voltage of the battery to be charged Check the polarities of the battery terminals positive for the symbol and negative for the symbol NOTE if the symbols are indistinguishable remember that the positive terminal is the one not connected to thevehiclechassis Connect the red charge clamp to the positive terminal ofthebattery sym6ol Connect the black charge clam p to the vehicle chassis ata safe distance from the battery andthefuel pipe NOTE if the battery is not installed in the vehicle connect the clamp directly to the negative terminal of the battery symbol CHARGE Power the battery charger by inserting the power supply cable into the power outlet and turning the switch if present toON The ammeter if present will indicate the current in Amps delivered towards the battery during this phase the pointer of the ammeter will decrease slowly to very NOTE Once the battery is charged you may note the liquid inside the battery starting to boir It is advisable to stop charging when this phenomenon appears so as to prevent damage to the battery AUTOMATIC CHARGING FOR MODELS WHERE PROVIDED 1 Switch in automatic position UTRONIC During this phase the battery charger will constantly monitor the voltage over the ends ofthe battery and will automatically deliver or cut off the charge current towards the battery 2 Switch in manual position _f CHARGE Inthispositionautomaticoperationisdeactiv ated For any other information relative to the charging system of the battery please refer to the instruction manual WARNING SEALED BATTERIES A If it is necessary to charge this type of battery take great cate Charge slowly keeping an eye on the voltage over the battery termlnals Thls voltage can be read easily using a normal tester and when It reaches 14 4V for 12V batteries 7 2V for 6V batteries and 28 8V for 24V batteries we recommend terminating the charging process Simultaneous charging of several batteries This operation must be performed with great caution WARNING do not simultaneously charge different types of batteries or batteries with different capacities or levels of discharge If you have to charge more than one battery at the same time you can connect them in series or In parallel Between the two systems we recommend connection in series because you can easily check the current charging each battery as it will be the same as that shown by the ammeter NOTE When connecting two batteries in series with nominal voltages of 12V we recommend setting the 12V 24V switch to 24 V if present FIG D END OF CHARGE Remove the power supply from the battery charger by turning the switch to OFF if present and or removing the power supply cable from the mains outlet Disconnect the black charge clamp from the chassis of the vehicle or from the negative terminal of the battery symbol Disconnect the red charge clamp from the positive termi nal of the battery symbol Store thebatterychargerin adryplace Close up the battery cells with tne appropriate plugs if present STARTING For starting turn the switch to the starting position correspond ing to the voltage of the vehicle Before turning the starter key it is essenti al to make a rapid charge of 5 10 minutes which will make starting much easier To start press the remote control button only for 3phase The output current will be shown on the ammeter scale with highervalues A WARNING Before starting check the vehicle manufacturer s i nstructions carefully I Make su re the power su pply line is protected with fuses or automatic switches whose size corresponds to that given on the data plate with the symbol t___ i
