5-42 ENGINE TOP END
Cylinders, Piston
Do not mix up the top ring and second ring.
Install the top ring [A] so that the R m ark [B] faces up.
Install the second ring [C] so that the RN”mark[D]faces
up.
The piston ring openings must be positioned as shown in
the figure. The openings of the oil ring steel rails m ust be
about 30 45° [F] of angle from the opening of the top
ring.

Arrow mark [E] must be faced tow ard the engine front.
Opening Positions [G]
Face the arrow mark [A] on each piston toward the front
side [B].
The front and rear pistons are the same, but they should
be installed in t heir original positions.
CAUTION
Incorrect installation of the piston could cause pis-
ton seizure and result in severe engine damage.
Fit a new piston pin snap ring into the side of the piston
so that the ring opening [A] does not coincide with the slit
[B] of the piston pin hole.
Apply molybdenum disulfide oil to the outer surface of the
piston pin.
The m olybdenum disulfide oil is a mixture of engine oil
and molybdenum disulfide grease with a weight ratio (10
:1).
When installing the piston pin snap ring, compress it only
enough to install it and no more.
Apply m olybdenum disulfide oil to the cylinder bore.
Apply molybdenum disulfide oil to the front and rear of the
piston skirt.
Install the rear cylinder first, with the rear piston at TDC.
