CRANKSHAFT TRANSMISSION 8Connecting Rod Twist Measure connecting rod twist oWith the big end arbor still on V blocks hold the con necting rod horizontally and measure the amount that the arbor varies from being parallel with the surface plate over a 100 mm length of the arbor to determine the amount of connecting rod twist If the connecting rod twist exceeds the service limit the connecting rod must be replaced Connecting Rod Twist Service Limit 0 2 100 mm Connecting Rod Twist Measurement Connecting Rod Big End Bearing insert Crankpin Wear Bearing insert crankpin wear is measured using plastigage press gauge which is inserted into th clearance to be measured The plastigage indicates th clearance by the amount it is compressed and widene when the parts are assembled Measure the bearing insert crankpin clearance Remove the connecting rod big end caps and wip each bearing insert and crankpin surface clean of oil oCut strips of plastigage to bearing insert width an place a strip on the crankpin for each connecting ro parallel to the crankshaft so that the plastigage will b compressed between the crankpin and the beari insert o nstali the connecting rod big end caps and tighten th big end cap nuts to the specified torque see Explode View NOTE cDo not turn the crankshaft and or during clearance measurement connecting ro Remove the connecting rod big end caps and measu the plastigage width to determine the bearing inse crankpin clearance Connecting Rod Big End Side Clearance Measure connecting rod big end side clearance Insert a thickness gauge between the big end and either crank web to determine clearance Connecting Rod Big End Side Clearance Standard 0 13 0 38 mm Service Limit 0 50 mm A Crankpin B Plastigage Connecting Rod Big End Bearing Insert Crankpin Clearance Standard 0 031 0 059 mm Service Limit 0 10 mm If clearance is within the standard no bearing replace ment is required If clearance is between 0 059 mm and the service lim A Connecting Rod B Thickness Gauge If clearance exceeds the service limit replace the con necting rod with a new one and then check clearance again If clearance is too large after connecting rod replacement the crankshaft also must be replaced 0 10 mm replace the bearing inserts with inser painted white blue Check insert crankpin clearanc with plastigage The clearance may exceed th standard slightly but it must not be less than th minimum in order to avoid bearing seizure If clearance exceeds the service limit measure th diameter of the crankpins
