66 ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM CAUTION Engine Oil and Filter WARNING Motorcycle operation with insufficient deteriorated or contaminated engine oil will cause accelerated wear and may result in engine or transmission seizure accident and injury lf the engine oil gets extremely low or if the oil pump or oil passages clog up or otherwise do not function properly the oil pressure warning light will light If this light stays on when the engine is running above idle speed stop the engine immediately and find the cause Engine OH and or Filter Change Engine OH Level Inspection If the oil has just been changed start the engine and run it for several minutes at idle speed This fills the oil filter with oil Stop the engine then wait several minutes until the oil settles Warm up the engine so that the oil will pick up any sediment and drain easily Then stop the engine With the motorcycle up on its center stand place an oil pan beneath the engine Remove the engine drain plug and let the oil drain completely cAUTjON CRacing the engine before the oil reaches every part can cause engine seizure If the motorcycle has just been used wait several minutes for all the oil to drain down Situate the motorcycle so that it is perpendicular to the ground and check the engine oil level through the oil level gauge The oil level should come up between the upper and lower level lines If the oil level is too high remove the excess oil using a syringe or some other suitable device If the oil level is too low add the correct amount of oil through the oil filler opening Use the same type and make of oil that is already in the engine A Drain Plug B Oil Filter Mounting Bolt NOTE Olf the engine oil type and make are unknown use any brand of the specified oil to top up the level in pre ference to running the engine with the oil level low Then at your earliest convenience change the oil completely If the oil filter is to be changed replace it with a new one see Oil Filter and Mounting Bolt Removal and Installation Notes Check the gasket at the drain plug for damage Replace the gasket with a new one if it is damaged After the oil has completely drained out install the drain plug with the gasket and tighten it to the spe cified torque see Exploded View Fill the engine with a good quality motor oil specified in the table Check the oil level Engine Oil Grade SE or SF clast Viscosity SAE 10W40 10W50 20W40 or 20W50 Required Amount A Upper Level B Lower Level C Oil Filler Opening Cap When filter is not removed 1 5 L When filter is removed 1 9 L
