TheSpanningTreeProtocol(STP)providesatreetopologyforanyarrangementofbridges.STPalsoprovide s
onepathbetweenendstationsonanetwork,eliminatingloops.Spanningtreeversionssupportedinclude
CommonSTP,MultipleSTP,andRapidSTP.
ClassicSTPprovidesasinglepathbetweenendstations,avoidingandeliminatingloops.Fo

MultipleSpanningTreeProtocol(MSTP)supportsmultipleinstancesofSpanningTreetoefficientlychannel
VLANtrafficoverdifferentinterfaces.EachinstanceoftheSpanningTreebehavesinthemannerspecifiedin
IEEE802.1w,RapidSpanningTree(RSTP),withsligh
tmodificationsintheworkingbutnottheendeffect(chief
amongtheeffects,istherapidtransitioningoftheportto‘Forwarding ’ ).ThedifferencebetweentheRSTPand
thetraditionalSTP(IEEE802.1D)istheabilitytoconfigureandrecognizefullduplexconnectivityandports
whichareconnectedtoends
